Since 1989, with the World Bank loans China has gradually established an eco-system field positioning research system consisting of 29 field stations (CAS) of good research basis. The stations represent the following Eco-systems: agriculture, forest, grassland, lake, marine, wetland and desert. Meanwhile the sub-centers of water, soil, atmosphere, biology, aquatic system and a Synthesis Center were also established, the Chinese Ecosystem Research Network was founded. The CERN Synthesis Center was officially set up in 1990 as an organization under the Commission For Integrated Survey of Natural Resources, CAS.

The
scientific research works in charged by Water Sub-center are concentrate
to the scale transfer and quantitive remote sensing research, which
is a part of synthetic research of land ecological system. The scaling
research is carried out by means of quantitive remote sensing, GIS,
ground-truth simultaneous observation and validation system, especially
the CERN experimental stations in existence.

the
Soil Sub-Center (SSC), Subordinated to the Institute of Soil Science,
Chinese Academy of Sciences, was established in 1992 by CERN. SSC
is responsible for data management of CERN long-term observation
of ecological processes in soils. The exisiting database include
1) CERN Soil Monitor Database, which is on SSC's 'Soil Data Directory'
web pages to metadata access.; 2) CERN NPK research database; and
3) Soil type database of China. More>>
Atmosphere
sub-center (ACAS)/CERN is under the leadership of Institute of Atmospheric
Physics. SCAS possesses advanced instruments and technique-supporting
system, including automatic observation system for exchange study
of surface and atmosphereĦ£The important technique tasks include
taking charge of radiometer calibration and data quality control
of 36 stations of CERN; 16 greenhouses observation stations; 5 regional
base stations. More>>
The
main objectives of Biological Sub-center of CERN are to establish
database for Chinese ecosystems, to integrate the long-term observation
data from CERN all stations, to explore ecological pattern, process
and dynamics in large spatial and temporal scales and to propose
important scientific theory and strategic suggestion to the Government.

The
Aquatic Ecosystem Sub-center was formally established at the beginning
of 1996. It is subordinate to the Institute of Aquatic Life (Wuhan),
CAS, and now consists of Donghu Lake Ecosystem station, Taihu Lake
Eco-system Station, Dayawan Marine Biological Station, Jiaozhouwan
Marine Ecosystem Station and Hainan Marine Ecosystem Statione.
